Harnesses & SRLs: Inspection and recertification
Fall protection equipment needs to be visually inspected before each use and must be inspected by a competent person at least every six months. Frequent use or wear will need more frequent inspections. We suggest:
- Pre-use inspection
- Post-use inspection
- Bi-annual or annual inspection by a competent worker
What is a competent worker?
In general, for people to be competent in the health and safety aspects of their work, they will need a combination of the following requirements:
- be qualified because of knowledge, training, and experience to do the assigned work
- have knowledge about the hazards and risks associated with the job or task to be performed (e.g., knows what hazards and risks are present)
- know how to recognize, evaluate, and control these hazards and risks (e.g., knows what precautions to take or controls to use/are in place for the different hazards or risks)
- can work so that their health and safety and the health and safety of others is not in danger
- have knowledge of the laws and regulations that apply to the work being done.
Harness certification
The annual inspection carried out by a competent worker should be documented and the inspection procedures need to be carefully written down. If you have equipment that has been stored for a long period, a formal inspection by a competent person should be performed.
Remember to inspect all equipment according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Instructions should be kept in a location where they are readily accessible to the workers.
Don’t forget to remove equipment from service if a warning system or stress indicator has been activated and follow the manufacturer’s direction for equipment disposal.
We offer manufacturers' certified inspections for a wide range of partners.

FAQ on our fall protection equipment inspection service
Visual inspection involves checking key fall arrest equipment such as harnesses, lanyards, tripods, davits, and personal protective equipment for any signs of wear, damage, or defects.
According to CSA standard Z259.17-16 section 12, employers must ensure a competent person performs an annual documented inspection of all fall-protection equipment and systems. More frequent inspections may be required under certain conditions like harsh usage or high frequency of use.
Equipment records must include details as specified in Table 6 of the standard (ask your OHS committee), along with documentation on the maintenance and servicing history, which should be available until the equipment is permanently removed from service.
Self-Retracting Devices (SRDs), also known as Self Retracting Lifelines (SRLs) or Self Retracting Lanyards, are mechanical fall protection devices. Their inspection and servicing are crucial parts of an effective fall protection safety program.
In Canada, the CSA Standard CSA Z259.2.2-17 requires SRDs to be returned to the manufacturer or a manufacturer-approved agent for validation as per a schedule in the Standard. They must be inspected before each use, and if a defect is found, they should be serviced.
Yes, SRDs that are non-repairable, not designed for disassembly for internal inspection, or those for which the manufacturer provides a specific service life and inspection criteria are exempt from the validation process.
This FAQ provides a concise overview of the key aspects of fall arrest equipment inspection and maintenance as per the document. For more detailed information or specific queries, visitors should refer to the full text of the CSA standards mentioned or contact us.
SPI offers a full range of services, including annual inspection, maintenance, repair, and certification of fall arrest equipment, such as harnesses, lanyards, and Self-Retracting Devices (SRDs).
SPI technicians are trained and certified to CSA standards and other relevant regulations. We use only manufacturer-approved parts, and our maintenance procedures are in strict compliance with manufacturer recommendations and industry standards.
Yes, after each inspection and maintenance, SPI provides a detailed report that includes the condition of the equipment, the interventions carried out, and recommendations for future safe use.
This depends on the nature and extent of the maintenance required. However, SPI strives to provide fast and efficient service to minimize downtime for our customers.
We offer both options. For minor inspections and maintenance, we can intervene on site. For more complex repairs, equipment can be sent to our workshop.
You can contact us directly by phone, e-mail, or via our website to schedule a maintenance service. We recommend scheduling maintenance in advance to ensure timely availability.
