Are you ready in case of a spill?

Are you ready in case of a spill?

SPI9/9/2021

It is a real challenge to work in an industry where leaks and spills of hazardous substances are a constant possibility. The dangers of slipping on soiled floors or being in contact with liquid chemical spills represent health and safety hazards for your employees.

Consequently, workers need to react quickly and use the right equipment. In addition, the equipment ensuring employees’ safety must neutralize and absorb toxic, radioactive, biological, and corrosive materials.

It is, therefore, safe to establish prevention and control measures for leaks and spills. Furthermore, the implementation of this type of measure is an excellent health and safety practice. A kit with all the material necessary for spill control must be available to employees to achieve this.

It is worth mentioning that intervention kits for hazardous materials must be visible and accessible for workers. Thus, it is recommended to keep them near workstations with a potential spill risk.

The kit must include:

  • Material neutralizing or absorbing the spilled chemical or biological substances
  • Protective clothing, safety glasses, masks with air-purifying cartridges and adapted gloves
  • Socks or absorbing materials to contain the spill

*Reminder

Carefully select an absorbent adapted to your needs depending on the type of leak, durability of the absorbent material as well as the absorption capacity to avoid unnecessary costs.

The 10 steps in case of a spill:

1.Assess the risk: Evaluate the substance spilled and identify the source. If you are not familiar with the liquid and its chemical properties, vacate the area and contact the proper local authorities.

2.Protective clothing: Wear appropriate protective gear for the situation. If the source or the material is not identifiable, assume the worst.

3.Contain the spill: Contain the liquid and seal drains.

4.Stop the leak : Close valves, rotate punctured drums and plug leaks where it is possible and safe to do so.

5.Begin the clean-up: Use absorbents to safely clean up spilled liquids. In case of severe spills, contact the proper authorities for help.

6.Contact the authorities: Report the spill to proper legal authorities in your community. Be sure to fill out all necessary reports in accordance with local laws.

7.Dispose of used material: Absorbent materials take on the characteristics of whatever they absorb. Be sure to dispose of used absorbents and spilled liquids in accordance with local laws.

8.Decontaminate : Clean all tools and reusable materials properly before reuse.

9.Restock safety material: Replace absorbent materials and safety equipment used in any clean-up operation.

10.Review contingency plans and emergency procedures: Review or create plans for the prevention, control and fight against spills. This comprehensive and specific plan describes both the necessary containment and countermeasures implemented to prevent spills. Also, in this plan, the intervention procedure to follow in case of a spill is also described.

A spill and leak control plan implemented in a workplace allows for a rapid and efficient response in this type of situation. Therefore, it is a highly recommended occupational health and safety approach. As a result, the right equipment is essential.
