Pyramex does not take eye protection lightly
Your eyes are exposed to different dangers at work: dust, residues, chemical products, but also the sun's glare and other light sources. Eye protection in the workplace is not to be taken lightly and Pyramex understands this. The company puts its expertise and knowledge at the service of workers' eye protection.
Eye protection equipment has various characteristics when it comes to materials, engineering, and design. Choosing the right eyewear based on the risk can help reduce the amount and severity of eye injuries. SPI offers workers quality products manufactured by Pyramex, including safety glasses with photochromic or polarized lenses.
What difference does the color of the lenses make?
There are a wide variety of lenses available, each designed for different applications. Lenses can be polarized, clear, or even tinted and offer distinct levels of ultraviolet protection.
For example, gray or bronze lenses reduce sunlight and glare. Blue-tinted lenses reduce brightness and glare from indoor lighting, while yellow lenses increase contrast and protect against blue light.
What is a photochromic lens?
A photochromic lens is a plastic lens that contains a layer of molecules that react to UV light. For example, when a worker moves from an indoor workplace to an outdoor location, photochromic lenses detect UV rays and automatically darken to protect the eyes from UV radiation. After only a few minutes in the sun, the lenses should darken to the point of completely blocking UV rays from the user's eye.
How does it work?
Molecules are clear to artificial light. But when exposed to UV light, these molecules undergo a chemical process that causes them to change shape. The new molecular structure absorbs parts of the visible light, which darkens the lenses. The tint of the lens therefore changes depending on the intensity of the UV rays. In the absence of UV rays, the molecules return to their original shape with the lens regaining its transparent appearance.
What is a polarized lens?
When light is reflected from a surface such as glass, water, or snow, the light waves become polarized, creating reflections, and causing glare. This glare distorts the true color of objects and makes them harder to distinguish. It also causes a mirror effect on wet surfaces. Glare can be uncomfortable and cause eye strain due to squinting.
Light from a single source can travel in all directions at once. However, when passing through a polarizing filter, the light can only pass through one ray. The glare is absorbed by the filter.
